What to write in a group card
Example messages for farewell, retirement and graduation cards, sorted by who they’re for, plus what to write when you barely know the person.
- Farewell messages for a coworkerFor a boss, a close colleague, or someone you barely know
- Retirement messagesFor coworkers, bosses, teachers and friends
- Graduation messagesFrom teachers, friends and family
- Leaving card messages (UK)For a colleague’s last day in the office
When you don’t know what to write
A group card is hard when you don’t share many stories with the person. Skip the big feelings and write down one small, true thing instead.
- A place you were together: the break room, a client visit, a delayed train
- Something they always said
- One thing they did that helped you, however small
- One wish for what comes next
Three sentences is enough. In the show, a long message appears slowly, as if it were being written, and short ones arrive side by side with others. Either way, it’s one more voice for the person who reads it.
For someone you barely know
Even if you’ve only crossed paths a few times, there’s something honest to say. Start from what you’ve seen, or from how the people around them feel.
- We didn’t get to talk much, but you always said good morning like you meant it. Thank you, and all the best.
- Your updates in the team meeting were always the clearest ten minutes of the week. Good luck with what’s next.
- I only knew you from the elevator and the coffee line, and I’ll still miss seeing you there. Take care.
- We never worked on the same project, but judging by how sad your team is, you must be great to work with. Best of luck.
- I wish we’d had more time to get to know each other. Wishing you every success.
- Thank you for the help with the printer that one time. It meant more than you know. All the best!
